Kasbah Tamadot
P2005 Marrakech, BP 67, Asni 42152, Morocco
About
Forty five minutes from Marrakech, where the plains begin to wrinkle into the Atlas Mountains, Kasbah Tamadot waits behind a winding approach road that understands the value of suspense. The estate was once the private home of Italian antiques dealer Luciano Tempo, whose eye for treasures still lingers in carved doors, painted ceilings, lantern lit salons and rooms layered with objects that feel collected rather than ordered from a catalogue. Later acquired by Sir Richard Branson, it became one of Morocco’s most seductive retreats. The great trick here is choice. Stay in the main kasbah for courtyards, decorative drama and the feeling of inhabiting a grand mountain house. Or book one of the Berber tent suites, where canvas comes with a terrace, wide valley views and a hot tub that may ruin future hotel standards. Few places offer heritage romance and playful escapism with equal confidence. Days drift easily: mint tea under olive trees, a hammam session, lazy lengths in the pool, perhaps a mountain walk if ambition survives breakfast. Food is polished Moroccan comfort rather than laboratory gastronomy, and service has that rare quality of being attentive without choreography. “Tamadot” is said to mean soft breeze in Berber. It suits the place. Expect atmosphere, warmth and scenery with real presence. Do not expect urban buzz or minimalist restraint. This is Morocco in a silk jacket, and it wears it very well.
