Kasbah d’If
Hajar, Morocco
About
High in Oman’s Hajar Mountains, Kasbah d’If offers the pleasant shock of discovering that Arabia can feel alpine. Visitors often arrive expecting heat and dunes, then wake to cool air, terraced orchards, and cliffs that look carved by a giant with excellent taste. The house takes its cues from old mountain settlements: stone walls, earthy tones, shaded terraces, timber details, and the kind of architecture that seems grown from the slope rather than placed on it. Nothing here fights the landscape. That alone already puts many modern hotels in an awkward position. The surrounding Hajar range is one of the oldest on Earth, a wild sweep of limestone ridges and canyons shaped over millions of years. Long before luxury travellers appeared with linen shirts and hydration bottles, these mountains were sustained by ingenious falaj irrigation channels that carried water to villages and fruit terraces. Some are still in use. Few minibars can compete with that level of heritage. Life at Kasbah d’If is gloriously simple. Breakfast with mountain views. Walks through ancient paths and villages. Evenings under star heavy skies with very little light pollution and even less nonsense. Food tends toward honest regional flavours: rice, spices, slow cooked meats, dates, breads, honey, seasonal fruit.
