About

On Pennsylvania Avenue, a short walk from the White House, the Willard InterContinental carries the quiet authority of a place that has watched American history unfold from its windows. The present building, opened in 1901 and designed by Henry Janeway Hardenbergh, wears its Beaux Arts grandeur with composure: limestone façades, disciplined symmetry, and an interior that unfolds into a luminous lobby crowned by a soaring glass ceiling. Presidents, poets, and power brokers have passed through these doors. Abraham Lincoln stayed here before his first inauguration. Ulysses S Grant lingered in the lobby to escape petitioners, giving rise to the term lobbyist. Julia Ward Howe wrote The Battle Hymn of the Republic here. History still hums politely beneath the chandeliers.
