Hotel Saint Vincent
1507 Magazine St, New Orleans, LA 70130, USA — New Orleans — United States
About
On a quiet stretch of Magazine Street in the Lower Garden District stands Hotel Saint Vincent, a grand brick survivor from 1861 with the calm authority of a building that has seen New Orleans through fever, war, and reinvention. Designed by the prolific local architect Henry Howard, the structure began life as Saint Vincent’s Infant Asylum, founded by the formidable philanthropist Margaret Haughery, whose fortune fed and sheltered thousands of orphaned children during the city’s yellow fever years. Howard gave the institution the dignity of a proper civic palace. Tall arched windows, rhythmic brickwork, and deep galleries catch the soft Gulf light while an interior courtyard creates the gentle hush of a cloister. The present day hotel keeps that gravity yet loosens the collar. Rooms feel airy and slightly bohemian, the courtyard hums with conversation, and the old corridors still carry a faint sense of purpose. Step outside and Magazine Street unfolds with galleries, bars, and antique shops. Few hotels place you so effortlessly inside the daily life of New Orleans while quietly reminding you how much of that life has passed through these walls.
