About

A few blocks from the French Quarter, in the quietly expressive streets of Faubourg Marigny, Hotel Peter and Paul occupies one of the most atmospheric religious complexes in New Orleans. The property began life in the mid nineteenth century as the parish of Saints Peter and Paul, founded to serve the city’s growing German Catholic community. What survives today is a remarkable ensemble: a Gothic Revival church from the 1860s, a rectory, a convent, and a brick schoolhouse, each carefully restored rather than polished into anonymity. Walking through the compound feels like drifting across chapters of the same story. The church still rises with its tall lancet windows and pale timber ceiling, its former nave now given a contemplative second life. In the convent, delicate Italianate details remain intact, sunlight catching on old plaster and narrow corridors. The schoolhouse carries a quieter dignity, its classrooms transformed with restraint. New Orleans hospitality rarely leans toward understatement, yet this place manages it with grace. History hangs in the air like incense that never quite faded, and the architecture does most of the talking. Outside, Marigny hums with music and late evening conversation, while inside the old parish buildings keep their calm, as if still observing a kind of secular devotion to craft, memory, and time.
