Hotel Henrietta
3500 St Charles Ave, New Orleans, LA 70115, USA — New Orleans — United States
About
On St. Charles Avenue, where the streetcar glides past live oaks and iron balconies with unhurried grace, Hotel Henrietta brings a rare novelty to Uptown New Orleans: something genuinely new. The five story boutique hotel opened in 2024, becoming the first ground up hotel built along this storied avenue in roughly three decades, a bold gesture on one of the city’s most tradition minded boulevards. Designed by the local studio Farouki Farouki, the building borrows its language from the surrounding Garden District without imitating it outright. Deep balconies run along the facade, tall windows catch the shifting Louisiana light, and arched openings create rhythm across the street facing elevation. The effect feels contemporary yet fluent in the architectural dialect of New Orleans, where porches, shade, and social life have always been intertwined. Henrietta also carries a quieter historical thread. It operates as the modern counterpart to The Columns, the celebrated 1883 mansion two blocks away that once served as the private residence of tobacco merchant Simon Hernsheim. The new hotel takes its name from Hernsheim’s sister Henrietta, a small act of historical continuity woven into a thoroughly modern structure. With only forty rooms, the atmosphere leans residential rather than theatrical. Balconies invite guests to watch the passing streetcars or, in season, the exuberant Mardi Gras parades that roll directly along St. Charles Avenue. It is the sort of place that understands New Orleans well: a city where architecture frames daily life, and where a front porch can be as important as a grand lobby.
