Minimalism clearly wasn't on the agenda when Grand Hotel Son Net was conceived. Dating back to 1672, this magnificent country mansion once presided over an estate covering a third of Puigpunyent, a village in the foothills of Mallorca's Tramuntana Mountains.

Its ivy covered façade and imposing stone arches have survived the centuries rather gracefully. Inside, Spanish designer Lorenzo Castillo has taken a decidedly more flamboyant approach. Three years spent hunting down period furniture have resulted in 31 individually decorated rooms and suites, rich in carved wood, antique paintings, sumptuous fabrics and colour. It's the sort of place where even the furniture seems to have an interesting family history.

The hotel has entertained its share of characters, too. Lauren Bacall reportedly arrived in a Rolls Royce and immediately instructed the owner to fetch her a dry Martini. They eventually became friends. One can imagine the conversations. Outside, formal gardens, a vineyard and a beautiful swimming pool give way to sweeping mountain views. There is a striking vaulted spa, while the kitchens draw on Mallorcan produce and the estate's own gardens.

Just twenty minutes from Palma, Son Net is best enjoyed without an ambitious sightseeing schedule. Between the architecture, the gardens and a leisurely lunch on the terrace, the day has a habit of filling itself.
