About

Behind the bustle of Piazza Tasso, hidden behind orange groves and subtropical gardens, Grand Hotel Excelsior Vittoria still carries the atmosphere of the nineteenth century Grand Tour surprisingly intact. Goethe came to Sorrento seeking southern light and Wagner stayed nearby while Europe’s wealthy travelers arrived here by sea in search of culture, winter sun and a certain Italian elegance that northern Europe could not provide. The Excelsior Vittoria feels like one of the last places where that world never entirely disappeared. The hotel stretches across three historic villas built between 1834 and 1880, perched dramatically above the harbor. Arriving by ferry remains the most theatrical way to experience it. A private elevator carved into the cliff transports guests fifty meters upward from the marina into gardens filled with palms, pergolas and Roman columns uncovered during construction works. One immediately understands why generations kept returning here. Inside, the hotel consciously resisted modernization. Frescoed ceilings, marble staircases, polished antiques and long corridors create an atmosphere that feels aristocratic rather than fashionable. Lucio Dalla wrote parts of Caruso here after hearing stories about tenor Enrico Caruso spending his final days in Sorrento. His suite still exists almost as a preserved time capsule. Yet this is also a hotel that rewards careful room selection. The experience varies considerably between categories. Some rooms feel merely traditional, while the finest suites and sea view rooms fully unlock the property’s magic with balconies overlooking the Bay of Naples and Vesuvius. Open the shutters at sunset with a glass of Falanghina in hand and suddenly the entire hotel makes emotional sense. The Michelin starred Terrazza Bosquet remains one of Sorrento’s great dinner stages, though honestly, the true luxury here is atmosphere. You stay for the feeling of continuity, for staircases built in another century, for the strange pleasure of sleeping inside a living fragment of old Mediterranean society rather than a polished contemporary resort.
