About
Grand Hôtel du Cap Ferrat has spent more than a century welcoming kings, aristocrats, film stars and captains of industry, yet its greatest achievement may be that it still feels remarkably unpretentious by Riviera standards. Many hotels claim a prime location on the Côte d’Azur. This one occupies an entire world of its own. Set within seven hectares of gardens on the tip of Saint Jean Cap Ferrat, the property feels less like a hotel and more like one of the great private estates that made the peninsula famous, with the unusual detail that you can actually book a room. The historic palace opened in 1908, when the Riviera was still the winter playground of European high society. More than a hundred years later, the formula has barely changed. Guests spend surprisingly little time indoors. Mornings begin with views across the Mediterranean. Afternoons disappear along the coastal path that circles the peninsula, past hidden coves, pine trees twisted by sea winds and the lighthouse that watches over Cap Ferrat. Then there is Club Dauphin. Reached by a private funicular descending through the gardens, the Olympic seawater pool sits directly above the rocks. It remains one of the Riviera’s great pleasures and a reminder that some places understood luxury long before anyone started talking about lifestyle. The recent renovations by Pierre Yves Rochon have refreshed the interiors without erasing their character. The rooms are elegant rather than theatrical, while the villas offer the kind of privacy that usually comes with a family office rather than a reservation confirmation. At Le Cap, Michelin starred chef Yoric Tièche celebrates the flavours of the Mediterranean with the confidence of someone who knows he has one of the finest terraces in France.
