About

At Galeries Lafayette Haussmann, shopping feels almost secondary to architecture. The building, inaugurated in 1912 and expanded in the following years, rises around a spectacular Art Nouveau dome designed by Ferdinand Chanut and Jacques Grüber. Step inside and your eyes are immediately pulled upward: stained glass in amber and blue radiates like a suspended sunset, framed by sweeping balconies in wrought iron that spiral with theatrical precision. The location, just off Boulevard Haussmann in the 9th arrondissement, places it firmly in the grand Parisian tradition of retail as spectacle. This is not accidental. Early twentieth century department stores competed not only on merchandise but on experience, and Galeries Lafayette still plays that game convincingly. Even the simplest act, taking the central escalator, becomes a slow reveal of perspectives, reflections, and glimpses of the dome from shifting angles. There is a rooftop terrace, often overlooked, offering a surprisingly generous view over Paris, from the Opéra Garnier to Montmartre. It is free, which feels almost mischievous given the setting. Downstairs, the food hall leans into French abundance with polished counters and precise displays rather than market chaos.
