fabric London
In Farringdon, fabric still feels like a club built by people who care more about what comes out of the speakers than what appears on Instagram. Opened in 1999 inside former cold stores serving Smithfield Market, it turned a hard, underground warren of brick and concrete into one of London’s defining electronic music addresses. Room 1 contains the detail that explains the philosophy best: its BodyKinetic floor uses transducers beneath your feet, turning bass into something physical. For the club’s 25th anniversary, the sound system was upgraded carefully rather than simply replaced louder and newer. That same long view applies to the music. Craig Richards and Terry Francis have been part of fabric since the beginning, while Ricardo Villalobos has returned for more than two decades. Sets are allowed time to breathe, and the crowd generally comes to dance, listen and stay awhile. fabric survived losing its licence in 2016 and reopened after a huge public campaign. That feels fitting. London has changed around it; the club has kept its priorities remarkably intact.
Good to know.
