Edinburgh (old town)
In Edinburgh’s Old Town, the streets do not unfold so much as plunge. The Royal Mile runs along a volcanic ridge from the Castle to Holyrood Palace, a spine of stone where closes slip away like secrets. Tenements rise improbably high, their weathered facades pressed tight against the wind. Gothic spires and the crown steeple of St Giles cut into a sky that changes its mind hourly. This is where the Enlightenment argued, where Deacon Brodie lived a double life, where history feels gloriously unretired.
