About

On Calle Granada, one of Málaga’s oldest streets and once the route connecting the city to Granada during the Moorish period, Cristine Bedfor Guest Houses quietly occupies an elegant 19th century residence designed by Gerónimo Cuervo, the architect behind Málaga’s Teatro Cervantes. The moment you know that, the proportions suddenly make sense. Even the staircase feels theatrical. The hotel has only 27 rooms and wisely avoids behaving like a conventional boutique hotel. Instead, it feels like stepping into the private house of a well travelled collector with excellent taste and perhaps a mild obsession with lamps, books and patterned fabrics. Interior designer Marta de la Rica leans fully into Andalusian warmth layered with English eccentricity. Wicker chairs sit beside antique trunks, striped textiles beside coloured glass, all somehow held together by Málaga’s golden light. At the centre lies a shaded courtyard inspired by traditional Andalusian patio houses, the kind originally designed to keep homes cool long before air conditioning appeared. Around breakfast time, with coffee, fresh fruit and the distant sound of the cathedral bells, the atmosphere becomes almost suspiciously pleasant. The surrounding neighbourhood helps enormously. Within minutes you reach the cathedral, the Roman Theatre, tapas bars and wine taverns where locals still argue passionately about anchovies. Picasso grew up nearby, Phoenicians traded here centuries ago, and yet the area somehow remains relaxed rather than overwhelmed by tourism. What makes Cristine Bedfor interesting is its refusal to chase contemporary luxury trends. No cold minimalism, no intimidating marble lobby, no oversized resort ambitions. Some travellers may find the interiors slightly busy. Others will immediately want to move in for a month.
