About

Some hotels in Seville compete with the Cathedral for attention. CoolRooms Palacio Villapanés takes a different approach. Behind an unassuming façade in the Santa Catalina district sits one of the city's finest eighteenth century palaces, built in 1729 for Manuel López Pintado, a sailor turned admiral, merchant, marquis and, judging by the scale of the place, a man who never worried much about appearing modest. The first impression arrives quickly. Marble columns frame a series of courtyards, sunlight spills across stone floors, and a sweeping staircase rises through the heart of the building. It was designed to impress visitors long before hospitality became an industry. Three centuries later, it still does the job remarkably well. What makes Villapanés stand out is the absence of theatricality. The palace has been restored with a light touch. Contemporary furniture sits alongside original architectural details without turning the place into a historical stage set. You are constantly aware that this was once a private residence, yet it remains comfortable enough to forget about architecture for a moment and simply enjoy being there. The location helps. The hotel sits outside the busiest tourist circuit, allowing guests to escape the crowds that gather around the Cathedral and Alcázar. At the same time, most of Seville's major sights are an easy walk away. Returning in the late afternoon, crossing the quiet courtyard and hearing little beyond the sound of water, feels like discovering a second version of the city. Nobody comes here for the rooftop pool. It is pleasant enough, but hardly the headline act. The restaurant is similarly enjoyable without trying to dominate your itinerary. The real luxury is waking up in a palace that has been standing since the days of sailing ships and Atlantic trade, then having breakfast beneath arches that were already welcoming guests decades before Mozart wrote his final symphonies. Seville offers no shortage of grand hotels. Few feel quite this connected to the city's past.
