Cliffs of Moher
Cliffs of Moher, Co. Clare, Ireland — Ireland
About
Rising from the Atlantic along Ireland’s rugged west coast, the Cliffs of Moher deliver a dramatic encounter with scale and raw geography. These sheer walls of shale and sandstone stretch for about eight kilometres and reach heights of over 200 metres, offering uninterrupted views towards the Aran Islands and the distant mountains of Connemara on clear days. A curious architectural note appears midway: O’Brien’s Tower, a modest stone lookout built in 1835 by local landowner Cornelius O’Brien to impress Victorian visitors already drawn by the spectacle. Today, well designed pathways trace the cliff edge, guiding walkers through shifting light, salt scented wind and the constant presence of seabirds such as puffins and guillemots. The atmosphere feels elemental rather than staged. Standing here, watching waves carve patiently at the rock, the journey to Ireland’s Atlantic fringe suddenly makes perfect sense.
