About
In the Engadin village of Sils Baselgia, where Lake Sils meets a landscape that has long attracted writers and painters, Chesa Marchetta stands as one of the valley’s most characterful historic houses. The building dates back to the seventeenth century and carries the hallmarks of Engadin patrician architecture: thick stone walls, deeply set windows and a façade decorated with traditional sgraffito motifs. Inside, centuries of Alpine craftsmanship remain intact. Pine panelled rooms glow with the warm tone of old wood, while arched ceilings and intimate stüvas recall the days when prosperous local families gathered here through long winters. The house later served as a bakery, and the old oven in the vaulted cellar still shapes the experience today. Guests wake to the smell of bread and pastries prepared in the same space where villagers once collected their daily loaf. The kitchen continues that spirit with seasonal dishes rooted in the Engadin landscape. What makes a stay compelling is not luxury in the modern sense, but authenticity. Chesa Marchetta feels like stepping into the living history of the valley, where architecture, hospitality and daily life still follow a rhythm shaped by the mountains.
