Château la Commaraine
24 Grande Rue, 21630 Pommard, France
About
The first thing you notice at Château la Commaraine is not the château. It is the wall. In Burgundy, walls matter. They divide vineyards, mark centuries of ownership and occasionally separate wines that command very different prices despite growing only metres apart. At La Commaraine, a weathered limestone wall runs alongside the estate’s Premier Cru vineyard, offering an early reminder that this is wine country in its purest form. The story begins in 1112. When the estate was founded, Notre Dame in Paris had yet to be built and Burgundy belonged to a very different Europe. Through wars, noble families, revolutions and changing fortunes, vines continued to grow here. They still do. Step through the gates today and you are entering a working wine estate that happens to have become one of Burgundy’s most interesting hotels. The recent restoration shows commendable restraint. The château remains unmistakably Burgundian, with pale stone facades, steep tiled roofs and views that lead naturally towards the vineyards rather than back towards the building. Inside, exposed stone walls, oak beams and natural materials create rooms that feel comfortable and grounded. There is luxury, certainly, but little desire to show off. What makes a stay memorable is how quickly you fall into the rhythm of the village. A morning walk through Pommard. Cellars hidden behind heavy wooden doors. Vineyard workers tending the vines. Lunch in Beaune. A swim overlooking rows of Premier Cru grapes. Dinner accompanied by wine grown a short walk from your table.
