Chateau de Varenne

Location & practical

A Provençal Château, Quietly Lived In

  • A family-run château near Avignon.
  • Twelve individually decorated rooms.
  • Gardens, a terrace and a heated pool.
  • €285 / night
  • 12 rooms
  • Sauveterre, Gard, near Avignon

Château de Varenne is a twelve-room hotel in Sauveterre, about 12 km from Avignon. The 17th-century house still feels like a family home, with a broad stone staircase, old parquet floors, antique furniture and French fabrics. Its gardens, two salons and heated outdoor pool give guests good reason to spend time here between excursions.

The rooms fall into four categories. Comfort rooms are compact; Superior rooms face the park and its old cedar tree. The larger Luxury rooms are the best choice for a couple planning to linger, though only two of the three have a private balcony or terrace. Family rooms sleep four or five. As the rooms differ in layout and decoration, it is worth asking for the features that matter to you when booking.

Breakfast is a Provençal buffet served in the painted breakfast room or on the terrace in good weather, and is charged separately. There is no regular dinner restaurant, so plan to eat in Sauveterre or further afield. A car is useful for visiting Avignon, Châteauneuf-du-Pape and the surrounding villages; the château can also help arrange local outings.
