Château de Fonscolombe

Location & practical

Fonscolombe, Provence in Full Estate Mode

  • Historic château rooms with real character
  • Private park, vineyards and Provençal estate life
  • Michelin starred dining in a refined country setting
  • 50 rooms
  • Le Puy-Sainte-Réparade

Built in 1730 just north of Aix en Provence, Château de Fonscolombe spent almost three centuries as a private family estate before becoming a hotel in 2017. Its Italianate façade already makes it an unusual Provençal château, but the interiors are what give it personality: floral wallpapers, terracotta floors, cane furniture, old fireplaces and rooms where the decoration feels accumulated rather than newly invented.

The grounds are equally important. Gaston de Saporta, the nineteenth century palaeobotanist who lived here and corresponded with Charles Darwin, helped shape a park now planted with around 180 species. Beyond it lie vineyards producing the estate’s organic red, white and rosé wines, a pool shaded by mature trees and a spa in the former stables.

Only 13 of the 50 rooms are inside the historic château, so this is worth checking when booking. We would choose a Historic Suite with park views. One even incorporates an old marble fountain from the Orangerie as a bathtub, a detail that Fonscolombe can claim without needing much embellishment.

Food is another reason to stay in for the evening. Marc Fontanne’s La Table de l’Orangerie holds one Michelin star, while Le Temps Suspendu takes care of the more informal meals. Aix is around twenty minutes away by car, but Fonscolombe works best when you give the estate some time rather than treating it merely as a handsome base.

The Flânons choice

Which room would we choose?

We prefer the Historical Suite with park view because it combines the château’s strongest historic character with generous proportions and views over the estate, making the room itself part of the Fonscolombe experience.

Our editorial pick. In the historic château with park or Cour d’Honneur views. One suite incorporates an old marble fountain from the Orangerie as its bathtub.

Prestige Suite

Only 13 of the 50 rooms are inside the historic château. For the strongest sense of place, choose a Historical Suite with park views; one suite incorporates an old marble fountain from the Orangerie as its bathtub.
