About
At the heart of the vineyards of Saint Estèphe, just north of Bordeaux, lies Château Cos d’Estournel, one of the most distinctive wine estates of the Médoc. The property owes its singular character to its founder, Louis Gaspard d’Estournel, an eccentric nineteenth century wine merchant whose fascination with Asia left a permanent architectural mark on the estate. The cellars, crowned by exotic pagodas and monumental gates, still stand as one of the most unusual silhouettes in the Bordeaux landscape. Tucked beside these historic buildings is La Chartreuse, a private residence within the estate that can occasionally be rented in its entirety. The house belongs to the owner of the château, entrepreneur Michel Reybier, who transformed it into a discreet retreat overlooking the surrounding vines. The architecture follows the tradition of Médoc country houses built in pale Gironde stone, while the interiors introduce the same oriental accents that define the estate. Carved Indian doors, silk fabrics and gold leaf chandeliers sit comfortably alongside French fireplaces and quiet libraries. With eight bedrooms spread across roughly 1500 square meters, the residence functions as a private home rather than a hotel. Guests stay within the working rhythm of a historic grand cru classé estate founded in 1811, with access to the cellars, tastings of the château’s celebrated wines and long views across vineyards that have shaped the reputation of Bordeaux for more than two centuries. The experience places visitors inside one of the Médoc’s most idiosyncratic estates, where wine, architecture and a curious nineteenth century fascination with the East still define the atmosphere of the property.
