At Castelfalfi, the first impression is almost suspiciously Tuscan. Cypress lined roads curl through vineyards and olive groves toward a medieval hill village crowned by a church tower, while the surrounding valleys seem determined to audition for every luxury travel campaign ever made. But Castelfalfi has existed here for centuries, with roots reaching back to Etruscan settlements and later Lombard rule.

The scale is what sets it apart. The estate spans more than a thousand hectares and includes an actual borgo, agricultural land, vineyards, forest, restaurants and even a restored tobacco warehouse now transformed into part of the hotel. Somewhere between the wine tastings, spa visits and sunset aperitivi, you occasionally remember people once dried tobacco leaves here for a living.

Architecturally, Castelfalfi is at its strongest outdoors. The authenticity of the village and landscape carries enormous emotional weight. Stone houses, earthy colors and winding alleys feel naturally woven into the hills rather than imposed upon them. The interiors, meanwhile, are elegant and impeccably executed, though perhaps slightly too polished at times.

The food remains reassuringly Tuscan. Expect estate olive oil, local wines, pecorino, handmade pasta and wild boar appearing on menus with the confidence of something that has survived centuries here. Thankfully, the culinary approach avoids unnecessary theatrics.

What Castelfalfi does exceptionally well is immersion. You do not feel like you are staying beside Tuscany. You feel temporarily absorbed into it, golf course included, however amusingly surreal it may be to see pristine fairways cutting through medieval farmland.

Arriving
The hotel is in Località Castelfalfi, 50050 Montaione, between Florence and Pisa. The approach is through rural Tuscan roads. Pisa Airport is approximately 50 km (around 40 minutes by car) and Florence Airport approximately 65 km (around 60 minutes), according to the hotel. The concierge can arrange private transfers. A complimentary shuttle operates within the estate.
Pets
Pets are welcome; the hotel publishes a supplement of €30 per pet per night. Inform reservations in advance and confirm any room-specific restrictions.
Accessibility
The hotel is reported to have step-free approaches, lifts, accessible parking, wheelchair-accessible public areas, restaurant, pool and spa. Because historic parts of the borgo include sloping paths and uneven stone surfaces, confirm the exact room layout and step-free route with the hotel before booking; an adapted guestroom was not independently verified.
Travelling with children
Children of all ages are welcome. Children under 3 stay free; cots are available on request. One extra bed may be requested, subject to room suitability and hotel confirmation, for €120 per night. Falfy Kids Club is complimentary for hotel guests aged 3–12; RAKxa spa is for guests aged 14 and over.

Worth knowing

  • At 146 rooms and suites, this is a full-scale resort rather than an intimate boutique hotel. The real charm comes from the borgo and landscape as much as the interiors.
  • Book a Belvedere or Dolcevita category for a more certain countryside view or private outdoor space; a standard Deluxe does not promise either.
  • The RAKxa spa welcomes guests aged 14 and over; its guest access is included, while treatments are charged separately.
  • The hotel pools and outdoor activities can be seasonal or weather dependent. Do not confuse the hotel pools with the separate public pools at the borgo entrance.
  • A car is useful for exploring this rural part of Tuscany. Private transfers are possible if you prefer to stay on the estate.
  • Published hotel starting rates run from €820 for Tabaccaia Classic to €4,400 for a Castelfalfi Grand Suite. These are indicative starting prices in EUR per room per night, not guaranteed quotes or a maximum seasonal rate.
