Casa Amarela
Rua Tenente Valadim 7, 7800-073 Beja, Portugal
About
Beja is not the sort of place that fills travel wish lists. Most visitors heading south continue towards the coast. Casa Amarela provides a convincing argument to do otherwise. From the street, the yellow façade looks cheerful but relatively unassuming. Step inside and the house quickly reveals its true character. A sculptural staircase winds through the courtyard. Geometric stained glass throws patches of amber and cobalt across walls and floors. Shelves display ceramics, books and objects collected over time rather than acquired to fit a concept. The effect feels personal, lived in and surprisingly joyful. The house dates from the nineteenth century, though nostalgia is in short supply. The owners have approached the renovation with the confidence of people who care deeply about art, colour and design. Ochre, terracotta, dusty blue and soft pink appear throughout the interiors, creating spaces that feel unmistakably contemporary while remaining entirely at ease in the Alentejo light. Looking through design magazines and lifestyle publications, Casa Amarela appears with remarkable regularity. After spending time here, the mystery largely disappears. The property has a visual identity that many larger and far more expensive hotels would envy. Every room feels distinct. Every corner offers something worth noticing. Yet the house never slips into the self importance that often accompanies highly designed hotels.
