At Ca’ Sagredo, Venice does what it does best: it makes you forgive a few imperfections because the staircase has just outperformed half the museums in town. This Grand Canal palazzo, first linked to the Morosini family and later acquired by the Sagredos, still carries the theatre of Venetian nobility in its bones. The monumental staircase, attributed to Andrea Tirali, rises beneath Pietro Longhi’s Fall of the Giants, while the salons bring frescoes, stucco, glass chandeliers and that particular Venetian talent for making daylight look expensive. The Sagredo name adds intellectual spice too: Gianfrancesco Sagredo was Galileo’s friend and one of the voices in his Dialogue Concerning the Two Chief World Systems. History, in Venice, rarely enters quietly. The location is superb, between Ca’ d’Oro and Rialto, close to the market side of the city rather than the more rehearsed San Marco stage. Breakfast may happen under Tiepolo, dinner at L’Alcova brings Italian and Venetian flavours to the canal, and the best rooms deliver the fantasy of sleeping inside a private palazzo. Choose carefully though. Some bedrooms feel more old fashioned than grand, with fabrics and finishes that would benefit from a refresh. Book a frescoed or higher category room if the room matters as much as the address. Ca’ Sagredo is glorious when judged as a historic Venetian experience, slightly more vulnerable when judged as a contemporary five star hotel. For travellers who love architecture, patina and Venice with a little theatre in its velvet, Ca’ Sagredo can still deliver something increasingly rare: the feeling that the city has briefly opened one of its private doors.
