Bourla theatre
Komedieplaats 18, 2000 Antwerpen, Belgium
About
Few buildings in Antwerp capture the theatrical spirit of the nineteenth century as vividly as the Bourla Theatre. Completed in 1834 and designed by city architect Pierre Bourla, the playhouse still commands its leafy square near the Meir with serene neoclassical confidence. A curved colonnade frames the entrance like a stage set in stone, inviting passersby to slow down and take a closer look. Inside, a rare horseshoe shaped auditorium rises in warm red and gold tones, built entirely in wood for acoustics that performers still praise today. The theatre survived near demolition in the twentieth century before a meticulous restoration returned its original elegance. Today it hosts the innovative Toneelhuis company, proving that historic walls can carry contemporary voices. Even without a ticket, lingering on the square at dusk reveals the subtle magic of a city that has always taken culture seriously yet knows how to wear it lightly.
