Bethlen Estates Transylvania
157, Transylvania, 547201 Criș, Roemenië — Criș — Roemenië
About
In the Saxon village of Criș, a quiet detour from the road between Sighișoara and Brașov, Bethlen Estates brings aristocratic Transylvania back to life with unusual discretion. The project is led by Count Nikolaus Bethlen, who returned to his ancestral land to restore several historic buildings belonging to his family and to the village itself. The result feels less like a hotel and more like a lived in estate that slowly reveals its layers. The main manor dates from the late eighteenth century, its thick lime plastered walls, creaking floors and tall tiled stoves carefully preserved. Around it stand restored farmhouses and barns, each furnished with antiques sourced from the region. Windows open onto orchards, hay fields and the rolling hills that define this part of Transylvania. Dinner is taken seriously here. The kitchen draws from local Hungarian and Saxon traditions, with ingredients from nearby farms and the estate’s own gardens. Expect slow cooked meats, forest mushrooms and excellent local wines served in rooms that once hosted Transylvanian nobility. The charm lies in the authenticity: history that feels comfortably inhabited rather than polished for display.
