About

On a quiet rise above the hot spring town of Yamashiro Onsen, Beniya Mukayu proposes a refined idea of retreat. The ryokan opened in 2007 under the guidance of owner and designer Yasuhiko Koyama, who imagined a place shaped by absence as much as presence. Its low wooden pavilions, clad in dark cedar and framed by moss gardens, dissolve into the surrounding forest. Interiors follow a disciplined palette of stone, paper and soft light. Rooms are deliberately spacious and largely free of ornament, directing attention to the changing seasons outside. The name Mukayu refers to a Zen concept of liberation from worldly concerns. That philosophy extends to the experience. Guests move slowly between private hot spring baths, a serene spa and a dining room where kaiseki cuisine celebrates regional produce from Ishikawa. Presentation is meticulous yet unpretentious. The effect is quietly disarming. Here luxury is measured not in spectacle but in the rare pleasure of stillness, a state increasingly difficult to find.
