About

The curious thing about Beau Rivage is how little it makes of its own history. Most hotels would build an entire marketing campaign around the fact that Empress Sisi spent her final hours here. Beau Rivage barely mentions it. That restraint suits both the hotel and the city. Geneva has long been a place where important things happen quietly. Opened in 1865, Beau Rivage stands directly on the lakefront, a short walk from the old town and the luxury boutiques around Rue du Rhône. The view has changed over the years. The famous Jet d'Eau was still in the future when the first guests arrived. The lake, the mountains and the constant movement of diplomats, financiers and travellers remain very much the same. Sisi returned here after the attack that would claim her life in 1898. Nearly a century later, Reagan and Gorbachev stayed at the hotel during a period when Geneva was once again helping shape world affairs. Yet none of this dominates the atmosphere. The hotel feels lived in rather than historic. The difference matters. Part of that comes from the fact that Beau Rivage is still owned by the same family that acquired it in the nineteenth century. In a world of international luxury brands, there is something reassuring about a hotel that has evolved gradually instead of being reinvented every few years. The marble staircases, polished wood, fresh flowers and lakefront salons feel authentic because they are. The same applies to Le Chat Botté. Geneva has no shortage of ambitious restaurants, yet this remains one of the addresses locals continue to return to. That says more than any award ever could. Travellers searching for minimalist design, rooftop DJs and the latest hospitality trend will find stronger contenders elsewhere. Beau Rivage appeals to a different instinct. It is the kind of hotel where the concierge still seems to know everybody, where breakfast unfolds at a civilized pace, and where a room overlooking the lake makes it remarkably easy to understand why generations of visitors decided to stay a little longer than planned.
