andBeyond Suyian Lodge

About
High on Kenya’s Laikipia Plateau, where the air is cooler, the roads emptier and the horizons suspiciously generous, andBeyond Suyian Lodge offers a safari with far more character than choreography. This is not the Maasai Mara circuit of lined up vehicles and polite traffic jams around a lion. Here, you are in a 44,000 acre private conservancy of granite outcrops, waving grasslands and old acacia country, with the freedom to roam properly. The land itself has history. Suyian was once a cattle ranch before being transformed into a conservation landscape, part of Laikipia’s remarkable shift from ranching frontier to one of Africa’s most progressive wildlife regions. Today the wider area supports elephants, Grevy’s zebra, reticulated giraffe, lion, leopard and some of Kenya’s most important rhino populations. The lodge is cleverly judged. Stone walls, timber, canvas and warm earth tones give it polish without the usual overdecorated safari theatrics. Suites open to wide views, outdoor showers and the kind of silence expensive cities cannot sell. You wake to light, birds and perhaps hoofbeats in the distance. What makes a stay memorable is movement. You can track wildlife on foot, ride horseback across open country, head out by camel, take night drives or sleep under canvas in fly camp style. Few safari properties offer such variety with genuine space around you. Food is generous and relaxed rather than experimental theatre: sunrise coffee, strong breakfasts, long lunches, fireside dinners and a bar that understands timing after a dusty afternoon drive.
