About

The drive from Cam Ranh airport to Amanoi gradually changes the picture many travellers have of Vietnam. Dense greenery starts giving way to rocky hills and dry vegetation. Ninh Thuận province happens to be one of the driest regions in the country, and for stretches of road the landscape feels unexpectedly rugged. You spend a few minutes wondering whether you are still looking at Southeast Asia. Amanoi sits above Vinh Hy Bay at the edge of Núi Chúa National Park, where mountains drop into the sea and protected forests meet the coastline. Long before luxury travellers arrived, this region belonged to the ancient Champa Kingdom, a maritime civilization that traded silk and spices across Asia. Nearby Chăm towers still stand as reminders that this coastline once looked outward toward shipping routes and distant ports. Architecture comes from Jean Michel Gathy, who drew inspiration from traditional Vietnamese communal houses and temple forms. Timber roofs rise above stone pavilions and pathways gently curve through the hillside. Views appear gradually. You catch a glimpse of the bay here, a line of mountains there, then suddenly the sea opens up in front of you. Looking down toward the water, you may notice the round basket boats still used by local fishermen. From a distance they look faintly absurd, as if somebody designed a boat after hearing one described over the phone. The atmosphere is exceptionally quiet, even by Aman standards. This is not the place for beach clubs or a long list of restaurants. Days move between the sea, the spa, the national park and your own terrace. Dinner stays close to the setting with seafood from nearby waters and Vietnamese flavours treated with restraint rather than reinvention. Amanoi is not difficult to enjoy, but it rewards a particular mood. After a few days, the rhythm becomes surprisingly natural. The sea, the hills and the silence quietly take over your schedule.
