About
Amanfayun sits in Fayun, an old village west of Hangzhou’s lake, where the city fades into bamboo, tea fields and temple hills. You can walk for several minutes before it becomes clear where the hotel begins. A stone lane turns, a timber door opens, and suddenly your room is part of the village rather than placed beside it. The houses were restored with clay roof tiles, stone floors, dark wood and lattice screens. Nothing tries too hard. Some walls still look slightly uneven, which is precisely why the place works. It feels lived in, not staged for people who collect tasteful silence. The location gives Amanfayun its real weight. Lingyin Temple, founded in 328 AD, is within walking distance, and the surrounding paths have long been used by Buddhist pilgrims moving between temples in the hills. In spring, the nearby Longjing tea fields add another layer to the morning: workers on the slopes, fresh leaves being picked, guests discovering that breakfast tastes better after a short walk and a little humility. This is not the Hangzhou of glass towers or polished city glamour. It is quieter, older, greener, and sometimes almost too calm. The restaurants follow that mood with Hangzhou dishes and vegetarian cooking inspired by temple traditions. Come for drama and you may miss the point. Come for old timber, damp stone, tea, bells and a room that feels connected to its surroundings, and Amanfayun becomes difficult to forget.
