About

The first surprise at Aman Venice is how quickly you stop looking up. During the first hour, that seems impossible. You arrive by boat at Palazzo Papadopoli, step into a sixteenth century palace on the Grand Canal and immediately find yourself surrounded by gilded ceilings, monumental staircases and frescoes by Tiepolo. Every room appears to demand attention. You move slowly, partly because there is so much to absorb and partly because you keep forgetting where you were going. Then something curious happens. By the following morning, you are drinking coffee beneath those same frescoes without giving them much thought. The palace has become your hotel. That may sound unremarkable until you realise how rarely it happens. Many historic hotels feel like museums where guests happen to sleep. Aman Venice somehow feels like a palace where guests happen to stay. That transformation says a great deal about the property. The building is undeniably grand, yet the atmosphere is remarkably calm. While much of Venice hums with tour groups, vaporetto traffic and the constant search for the next landmark, Aman operates at a different rhythm. You can spend the morning wandering through San Polo, return through the palace gates and find yourself almost alone in one of the city's rare private gardens, watching boats glide along the Grand Canal. The contrast is striking. Venice is one of Europe's busiest destinations. Aman Venice may be one of its quietest addresses. The hotel occupies one of the city's great aristocratic residences, later owned by the Papadopoli family, wealthy nobles of Greek origin. Unlike many historic properties, much of the palace survives intact. The magnificent salons were created for Venetian high society centuries before anyone imagined luxury hospitality. Today they remain part of everyday life. Guests read, have an aperitivo or simply pass through rooms that would be considered major attractions almost anywhere else. Even the design philosophy deserves credit. Aman resisted the temptation to fill every corner with period furniture and historical references. The guest rooms feel restrained, contemporary and comfortable. The old and the new coexist without competing for attention. George and Amal Clooney famously chose the hotel for their wedding celebrations, though celebrity associations feel largely irrelevant once you are there. The real privilege is spending time inside one of Venice's great palaces and watching it gradually become familiar.
