In Japan, where even a train delay of a minute can be newsworthy, Akitsu makes a gentle case for taking your time. Its name is an old Japanese word for dragonfly, a symbol of strength and presence. The guesthouse occupies a century-old kominka farmhouse in Kaminyū, a small Shiga mountain village known for its woodcarvers. The setting is wonderfully specific: timber houses, a cold-running stream and a landscape that makes schedules seem faintly unnecessary.
Australian designer Nikita Schmid restored the house and gave it a second life as a shop with one guest accommodation upstairs. The result feels more like staying in someone's carefully considered home than checking into a conventional ryokan. There is warm old timber, furniture chosen for its usefulness as much as its looks, and a private hinoki bath. After a walk through the village, soaking in fragrant cypress has an obvious appeal. Reaching the room involves steep wooden stairs, an honest reminder that this is an old farmhouse, not a purpose-built hotel.
Downstairs, the shop offers coffee, vintage Japanese finds and everyday wares that bring Japanese and Australian design into conversation. The selection favours things made to be used and kept, rather than admired briefly and forgotten. It is a philosophy that runs through the place: well-made, lasting and untroubled by a little imperfection.
There are bicycles for exploring the surrounding lanes and the stream, and woodcarving workshops are part of the local story. On a quiet morning, you might wake late, get a coffee when the shop is open, and discover that the day's main achievement is a long walk. Meals require some forethought; this is a small guesthouse, without a restaurant or the elaborate service rituals of a grand ryokan. Akitsu is best enjoyed over a couple of nights or more, by travellers happy to exchange an ambitious itinerary for the pleasures of a small place.
