Airelles Venezia
Fondamenta Zitelle, 33, 30133 Venezia VE, Italy — Venezia — Italy
About
On a quieter stretch of the Grand Canal in Cannaregio stands Airelles Venezia, set inside the remarkable Palazzo Donà Giovannelli. The palace tells much of Venice’s story in stone. Its elegant Gothic façade dates to the fifteenth century and is attributed to Filippo Calendario, the same architect linked to the Doge’s Palace. A century later the powerful Giovannelli family transformed the interiors with grand Baroque rooms designed by Baldassare Longhena. Today the restoration keeps that theatrical sense of scale. Guests pass through marble staircases, frescoed salons and tall windows opening onto the canal where gondolas still glide past at an unhurried pace. History lingers in curious ways. Napoleon is said to have stayed here when Venice fell under French rule in 1807, long before the building became a hotel. The atmosphere feels deliberately Venetian rather than decorative pastiche. Murano glass, terrazzo floors and carefully restored ceilings frame rooms that look out over rooftops and water traffic. Dining focuses on refined Italian classics built around lagoon seafood and seasonal produce. It is the rare Venetian address where architecture does most of the talking, and where staying the night feels like quietly inhabiting a piece of the Republic’s past.
