About

In Chiang Mai’s old Wat Gate quarter, just across the Ping River from the historic center, 137 Pillars House carries the quiet authority of another era. The heart of the property is a teak residence built in 1889 for the Borneo Company, once a major force in the region’s teak trade. Its story is tied to Louis Leonowens, son of the famed Anna Leonowens of Siamese court legend, who managed the company’s operations here. The house remains the architectural anchor of the hotel, raised on white pillars and wrapped in deep verandas that temper the tropical heat. Around it stretches a garden shaded by a towering rain tree whose age rivals the building itself. The atmosphere feels deliberately unhurried: wide lawns, dark teak floors, and suites that open onto long balconies where ceiling fans turn lazily overhead. Service follows the same rhythm, attentive yet discreet, with private butlers and afternoons that slip easily between the pool, the veranda, and the slow life of the river district outside the gates. Chiang Mai offers many polished resorts, yet few carry this sense of lived history. Here, the past is not staged.
